Boarding inside the international-school world is thinner than most families expect. Across our coverage, the real options are: two schools in Dubai (Repton and SISD), one on-site boarding school in Singapore (UWCSEA), the boarding villages of Harrow Bangkok and Malaysia’s British boarding tradition (Marlborough, Epsom), weekly boarding at Harrow Hong Kong, the upcountry Kenyan boarding schools around Nairobi, Canadian Academy in Kobe, AIS Saigon in Vietnam, and Korea’s Jeju Global Education City. Prices run from roughly HK$135,672 a year for weekly boarding at Harrow Hong Kong to RM 259,800 for full boarding at Marlborough College Malaysia — on structures that bundle tuition, meals and boarding differently at every school.

Who boarding actually suits

Boarding earns its keep in four expat situations. The serial posting: families rotating every two to three years (energy, diplomatic, NGO, construction) who want one continuous secondary education instead of three schools in three countries — this is the founding logic of the UWC movement and why UWCSEA boards around 350 students, including roughly 100 scholarship boarders a year selected through UWC national committees↗. The remote posting: giga-projects and single-employer towns where no suitable school exists — the NEOMs and Dhahrans of the world, where the choice is boarding in a hub city or splitting the family; our Saudi Vision 2030 schools guide maps how new school provision trails the new postings. The travel-heavy household: where weekly or flexi boarding covers the working week while the child stays home at weekends — the Harrow Hong Kong model. And the curriculum-continuity case: families in markets with no school in their system (a French family posted to Muscat, a British family in a city with no A-level school) who board the child in the system they intend to finish in.

Boarding is usually the wrong answer when it is chosen to buy a brand name, when the child is below about 11 without a strong pastoral structure around them, or when the family is using it to postpone a decision about the posting itself.

Bundling warning. Schools publish boarding costs on different bases. Repton Dubai, Harrow Bangkok and Harrow Hong Kong list boarding as a supplement on top of day tuition↗↗; Marlborough and SISD publish headline boarding schedules where the tuition-and-boarding split is less legible from the public document. Never compare a supplement row with a package row — ask each school for the single all-in annual figure for your child’s grade.

The notable absences: Saudi Arabia’s new-outpost wave (Beech Hall, King’s College Riyadh, Downe House, Sherborne and the rest) is entirely day-school so far — the families those schools serve live where the schools are. Hong Kong beyond Harrow is day-only at the international schools. And in the Gulf outside Dubai, boarding is effectively absent, which is why Repton’s houses draw families from across the region.

The three models

Full, weekly and flexi boarding

Full boarding (seven nights, exeats and holidays home) suits the remote-posting and serial-posting cases. At Repton Dubai that is Sunday-Saturday with all meals at AED 72,000 on top of tuition; the school will also arrange student visas for full boarders (AED 5,000 including VAT) — a detail that matters when both parents are posted elsewhere↗. Weekly boarding (school nights only) is the commute-killer: Harrow Hong Kong runs five nights, Sunday 7pm to Friday 4.30pm, and just under half of its Upper School boards — many with parents living in the same city↗. It also suits families posted to second-tier cities within weekend reach of a hub. Flexi boarding — day students boarding for stretches during parental travel or exam periods, which Repton explicitly offers — is the least known and often the most useful: ask every day school on your shortlist whether it will do it, because few advertise it.

Due diligence

Safeguarding: what to check before you sign

Boarding due diligence is different from day-school due diligence, because the school is the parent after 4pm. The strongest external instrument is a British Schools Overseas boarding inspection, which inspects boarding welfare against the UK’s national minimum standards — and is worth reading even for non-British schools. A worked example of why: the BSO boarding inspection of Repton Dubai judged the boarding provision and still recommended, among its development points, that the school offer girls the same quality of boarding experience as boys↗. That is the level of specific, checkable finding a real inspection produces — and no marketing page will volunteer it.

Ask for, and read, the following:

• The most recent boarding-specific inspection or accreditation report (BSO, CIS boarding standard, or the national equivalent) — the whole report, not the summary on the website.
• Staffing in the house: resident houseparents and their ratios by night, who is on duty at 2am, and the vetting standard for every adult with house access. UWCSEA’s published model — resident Houseparents who are teachers living on site with their families, plus boarding counsellors — is the shape you want described in writing↗.
• Weekend and exeat provision for full boarders: how many stay most weekends, and what the programme is when half the house goes home.
• Medical cover: on-site nursing hours, hospital arrangements, and — in the Gulf — what the medical insurance line costs (Repton lists AED 8,400-12,054 per year for boarders).
• Contact policy: phone and video-call rules by age, and how the school handles a child who is not settling in the first term.

The transition

Homesickness and transition: what the evidence says

The research base is thinner than the marketing suggests, but two findings are robust. First, homesickness is normal and mostly temporary: in the best longitudinal study we have (weekly tracking of first-year students living away from home), 94-96% reported at least some homesickness in their first term, and levels declined across the term for most students↗. Homesickness predicted worse overall and social adjustment — but not worse academic outcomes, and it did not weaken relationships back home; if anything those strengthened. Second, for boarding-age children specifically, a 2023 study of secondary boarding students in the British Journal of Educational Psychology found that only two dimensions of homesickness — ruminating about home and loneliness — predicted psychological distress, and that the protective factors boarders themselves identified were routine, immersion in activities, social connection and a good roommate↗.

The practical translation: the first half-term is the risk window; busy, structured houses with cross-age “house family” systems (UWCSEA’s term) and full weekend programmes are doing exactly what the evidence recommends; and a child still in acute distress after the first term is a signal to act on, not to wait out. Ask the school what its settling-in protocol is, who monitors it, and how it escalates.

The math

Boarding vs day school plus relocation

The honest comparison is not boarding fee vs day fee — it is boarding fee vs the cost of moving the whole family to the school. Run it on verified numbers. A Year-7 family considering Repton Dubai: day tuition AED 81,121 plus full boarding AED 72,000 plus insurance and extras — roughly AED 160,000-165,000 all-in for the year (2026-27 schedule)↗. The alternative — renting family accommodation in Dubai near the school, plus a second household in the posting city — exceeds that in most expat housing markets before counting the duplicated relocation itself. The math flips the other way where the posting city has a suitable day school: at Harrow Hong Kong, weekly boarding at HK$135,672 on top of HK$238,687 (Years 6-11 tuition) plus the HK$60,000 capital levy is rational only against the alternative commute or household split — which is why so many of its boarders have parents in the same city.

Two money traps to price in. First, the deposit stack: Repton’s refundable boarding deposit is AED 50,000 — confirm the refund terms and timeline in writing. Second, the calendar gap: Stamford’s Singapore boarding house bills academic days only, so holiday coverage is a separate arrangement and a separate cost↗. And check the employment contract: education allowances frequently cover tuition but exclude boarding, or cap it — the negotiation belongs in the offer stage, and our relocation checklist covers how.

• What is the single all-in annual figure for my child’s grade — tuition, boarding, deposits, insurance, trips, laundry, weekend programme — in writing?
• May I read your latest boarding-specific inspection or accreditation report in full?
• How many boarders are in the house in my child’s year group, how many stay at weekends, and who supervises at night?
• What is the settling-in protocol for the first half-term, and what happens if my child is still unhappy after it?
• Which charges are refundable (deposit, prepaid boarding) and on what notice and timeline?
• What happens in school holidays — is any coverage available, and at what cost?
• Do you offer flexi boarding for day families, and how is it booked and billed?
