Choosing an international school in Malaysia

Malaysia removed the 40% cap on Malaysian-citizen enrolment in international schools in May 2012, as recorded by the British Council. Schools serve both Malaysian and internationally mobile families. The change is historical context; waiting lists and pupil mix vary by school today. ↗

Directory listings give approximately 190 international schools nationally, including 33 in Johor and 14 in Penang. These are directory counts as of September 2026, not a live official register. Kuala Lumpur and the wider Klang Valley offer a substantial range of schools; compare the actual campus and curriculum when searching. ↗

Boarding options include Marlborough College Malaysia in Johor and Epsom College in Bandar Enstek, Negeri Sembilan. Epsom publishes separate fee schedules for day school, weekday boarding and full boarding, so the package depends on the child’s age and the boarding pattern chosen. ↗

In the Klang Valley, school and housing searches often involve Mont’Kiara/Sri Hartamas, Desa ParkCity, Bangsar/Damansara and Ampang. Forum-suggested application windows are not deadlines; availability is set by each school for the year group and start date.

Ask the school which immigration documents apply to your child’s nationality and existing residence status, and whether it can enrol international students. The Immigration Department publishes Student Pass information. The pass process varies with the child’s nationality and residence status. ↗

School fee pages describe 6% Service Tax on qualifying charges. Tax treatment varies by charge and family, so an itemised quote should show taxable items, any applicable exemption and whether displayed rates include tax. ↗

Read school-specific accreditation and inspection evidence. CIS or WASC accreditation, COBIS status, an AIMS membership and Ministry approval are different credentials. Where a British Schools Overseas report is available, check its date, scope and recommendations rather than treating these credentials as interchangeable ratings.

Options include British curricula leading to IGCSEs and A levels, American programmes, Australian provision and IB programmes. ISKL offers the IB Diploma alongside AP and other high-school courses; Marlborough offers the Diploma in sixth form. Fairview schools offer IB programmes, but authorisation should be checked by campus and stage. Australian International School Malaysia and Mont’Kiara International provide other curriculum choices.

• Alice Smith: its official 2025–26 schedule lists annual tuition of RM53,730–117,360 before applicable tax, with a RM15,000 enrolment fee and refundable deposit. Secondary 2026–27 fees and staged enrolment charges differ; see the profile for the distinction.
• Garden International School: standard 2026–27 tuition runs from RM52,440 for Nursery to RM126,870 for Years 10–13. Secondary EAL programme tuition is higher and replaces the standard rate; it should not be added to it.
• ISKL: the third-party 2026–27 listing gives RM70,200–143,400 across the age range. A separate RM59,000 registration charge applies from Prep Senior under the cited terms.
• The International School @ ParkCity is another option. Published sources list a 2026–27 range of RM25,800–87,000; other directories give different tuition and registration figures. See the ParkCity profile for the discrepancy and obtain a school-issued quote.

Compare the same age group and academic year, then add required support, transport, meals and other charges. Keep refundable deposits and payments credited against tuition separate from additional spending. For a child who needs a particular programme or support, the lower headline fee is not always the better value.

Penang options include the International School of Penang (Uplands), with a British-to-IB Diploma pathway, Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS), and Dalat’s American programme. The cited secondary guide gives Uplands fees of RM24,800–70,800 and POWIIS tuition of RM55,260–62,970 with RM39,600 for boarding. These third-party figures overlap with Kuala Lumpur ranges rather than showing a fixed percentage saving. ↗

Johor options include Marlborough College Malaysia and Raffles American School. Published sources describe coach services from Singapore, but current routes, eligibility and border journey times need checking. Compare living locally, travelling across the border and boarding separately. The cited 2026–27 Marlborough senior full-boarding figure is RM259,800 before applicable tax; it is a particular package, not a general Johor school price. ↗
