What the school is

History and the preparatory-school structure

DESS added Year 7 in 2021 and Year 8 in September 2022. Its published structure ends before GCSE courses, so pupils transfer elsewhere for their later secondary education. The 2023–24 board report includes feedback about transfers to Doha College and other destinations; receiving schools run their own admissions.

Academics and the 2023 inspections

The school’s inspection page reports Outstanding findings from its 2023 COBIS and BSO reviews. The March 2023 BSO report recommended publishing more standardised assessment data, since the school does not have GCSE or A-level examination cohorts. Read the report for the findings relevant to your child and ask what has changed since the review.

The 2023–24 board report gives June 2024 Year 8 GL Progress Test averages of 112 in mathematics and 111 in English, against a standardised reference average of 100. These are test scores, not percentages. The report also describes 141 internal extra-curricular activities and 110 pupils taking internal music lessons that year.

Admissions and cost

Assessments, priorities and payment deadlines

The admissions FAQ describes assessments of English, number skills and social interaction, with arrangements adapted to the entry stage. FS1 has a dedicated application window and group assessment. An application is reviewed when it reaches the relevant point on the waiting list; school reports and a confidential reference inform whether an assessment is offered.

Published priority categories include senior British Embassy diplomatic staff, corporate-sponsored places, Qatari passport holders, siblings and children of alumni. The list is not simply chronological, and no category guarantees admission.

An offer triggers an invoice for one term’s tuition and registration, payable by the stated deadline to secure the place. The published 2026–27 annual tuition, unchanged from 2025–26, is QAR 38,120 for FS1–Year 6, QAR 48,500 for Year 7 and QAR 49,500 for Year 8. Additional charges include QAR 2,750 registration and assessment fees of QAR 275–300. The QAR 2,000 Autumn Term reservation payment is offset against tuition, so do not add it again to the annual total. Published terms require a full term’s written withdrawal notice. Ask whether there is a separate charge for invigilating another school’s entrance assessment.
