What the school is

Ownership, campus and curriculum sequence

AIS belongs to Cognita, the for-profit group that also owns Stamford American in Singapore. The Lorong Chuan site includes infant care, Early Years and the later school divisions.

The school describes five curricula across its age range, more than 55 senior subject choices and over 300 co-curricular activities. These are schoolwide figures, not the options available to every child. The useful next step is the timetable for the intended year group, including subject combinations and which activities run during the school week.

AIS is authorised for the IB Primary Years and Diploma programmes. That does not make its entire pathway an IB continuum: the intervening Australian Curriculum and IGCSE stages remain part of the documented sequence. Families entering or leaving during those years should compare the actual subjects and assessments with the child’s previous or next school. The January–December calendar applies to both senior pathways.

The January–December question

Moving between school calendars

The AIS academic year runs from January to December. The 2025 schedule describes half-yearly advance billing: Semester 1, January–June, was invoiced in September and payable by 10 October of the preceding year; Semester 2, July–December, was invoiced in March and payable by 10 April. These are dated payment terms; the current contract and invoice carry the dates that apply.

A July departure falls around the middle of the AIS school year, not after a completed full year. A child moving to an August-start school may therefore join a differently timed grade sequence. Conversely, a January transfer may fall mid-year at the previous school. Neither arrangement automatically requires repeating or skipping half a year; the schools need to assess placement and curriculum coverage for the individual child.

The 2025 fee terms say course fees are not prorated when a pupil starts after a term begins or leaves before it ends, so the charge for a late arrival depends on the start date quoted. Because AIS publishes calendar-year schedules, a family budgeting across an August-to-June period may need figures from two different AIS fee years.

Academics in practice

HSC and IB Diploma choices and results

In Years 11–12, students choose the NSW Higher School Certificate, administered within the New South Wales education system, or the IB Diploma. The qualifications have different subject and assessment requirements. Both can support Australian and international university applications, subject to course prerequisites. The choice should reflect the student’s strengths and plans rather than treating one route as a fallback for the other.

AIS’s Class of 2025 reporting gives an IB average of 34.9, a top score of 45, 16% of candidates at 40 or above, 28% at 38 or above and 41% earning bilingual diplomas. The same reporting cites a combined-cohort average ATAR of 85, with 40% at 90 or above and 28% at a 95-or-above equivalent, alongside 22% receiving NESA HSC High Achiever awards. The combined ATAR figures should not be presented as HSC-only results without the underlying breakdown. Cohort sizes, pathway definitions and admissions criteria are needed for a fair comparison.

The school reports 100% university acceptance and 99% acceptance to a top-choice university, with Melbourne, Cambridge, Stanford and NUS among the named destinations. The percentages need a cohort year and a definition of top choice. They should also be distinguished from actual enrolments. A bilingual IB Diploma is a defined qualification outcome, not a measure of language fluency across the whole school.

Fees and the real cost

Calendar-year fees and separate support charges

The school’s 2027 fee schedule, in Singapore dollars including 9% GST, bills course fees by semester. Annual totals are S$31,356 for five-day, full-day Nursery, S$41,436 for five-day, full-day Pre-school 3, S$43,704 for Pre-school 4 to Year 2, S$45,012 for Years 3–5, S$51,912 for Years 6–9 and S$54,744 for Years 10–12. The 2026 schedule for the current year runs from S$42,408 (Pre-school 4–Year 2) to S$53,148 (Years 10–12). New pupils pay a S$920 application fee, a S$4,450 enrolment fee and a one-time facility fee of S$2,745 (Nursery and Pre-school) or S$6,200 (Prep–Year 12). An annual technology fee of S$610 (Prep–Year 5) or S$370 (Years 6–12) is charged on top, and external IGCSE, HSC or IB examination fees, which the school puts at about S$1,000–3,000, are billed separately.

The 2027 fee schedule lists EAL charges per semester: S$6,504 for Beginning, S$4,478 for Transitioning, S$6,504 for Year 6–8 co-teaching or Year 9–10 senior-studies preparation, and S$7,358 for the Intensive English Stream. Two semesters at the listed intensive rate total S$14,716, in addition to applicable tuition. The 2026 rates are S$4,347–7,142; placement and the combination of services should be confirmed. Assessment and semester reviews determine support; a reported one-to-two-year exit period is not a promised timetable for an individual child.

The school’s 2027 fee schedule gives course-fee discounts of 5% for a third child and 10% for a fourth and fifth child enrolled at the same time, and halves the enrolment and facility fees for a third family member (waived from the fourth). Its infant-care programme costs S$3,330 a month for five full days, paid two months in advance, with a S$580 application fee. Children who spend at least six months in infant care can continue into the Early Years programme after 18 months of age without paying the enrolment fee. Credit-card payments carry a 2.5–6% convenience fee per transaction.

Admissions and daily logistics

Applications, buses and Oldham Hall boarding

AIS accepts applications throughout the year, with records and language assessment informing placement. English Preparation and Preparatory Course for Secondary options provide separate routes for pupils developing academic English. Each has its own progression requirements and fees. For Singapore Citizen applicants where MOE exemption is required, the school’s explainer says AIS initiates the application, decisions are case by case and approval is school-specific. Its four-to-eight-week processing time is an estimate, not a guaranteed start date.

The school’s bus page requires an approved child restraint for Early Years and Prep pupils. It lists a S$50 send-back charge when an authorised guardian is absent from the drop-off point for a child in Year 2 or below. Fares are charged termly by distance from Lorong Chuan. Families should confirm the route, authorised pickup arrangements and current charges for the child’s age.

The 2026 Admissions Booklet mentions boarding at Oldham Hall. This is a separate boarding arrangement rather than residential accommodation on the AIS campus. The booklet does not give current costs, age limits or availability. Ask about eligibility, supervision, guardianship and holiday arrangements before relying on it.
