What the school is

A parent-run not-for-profit with two school systems under one roof

GESS is a private school association with an elected parent committee. It describes its funds as reinvested in teaching and learning. This gives families a defined role in governance.

The German section offers a range of German school-leaving qualifications, including the German International Abitur. The European section teaches the IB PYP, MYP and Diploma in English. Published profiles describe Excellent German School Abroad recognition and a German Language Diploma (DSD) option for IB pupils. DSD is a language qualification, distinct from the Abitur or IB Diploma; the level required depends on the intended university programme.

The school reports more than 15 languages across curriculum and after-school programmes, with mother-tongue provision including Dutch and Danish in published accounts. Current language choices, entry levels and timetabling should be checked for the child’s section and grade. A schoolwide language count does not mean every pupil can take every language.

GESS brought its preschool, primary and secondary divisions together at Dairy Farm Lane in August 2018. Secondary reporting describes a roughly S$135 million development on a 30,580-square-metre site beside Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. The single-campus arrangement is relevant to families with children in different divisions.

Fees and discounts

Tuition, development levy and other charges

The school fee page lists a one-time entrance charge of S$3,950, made up of S$3,550 enrolment and S$400 non-refundable application fees. The annual development levy is S$6,130 per pupil, with a 50% reduction from the second year of enrolment and for eligible third and subsequent children. These charges are separate from tuition.

The 2026–27 fee table lists annual IB-section tuition, including GST, of S$35,770 for Grades 1–5, S$40,545 for Grades 6–10 and S$43,990 for Grades 11–12. The German-section amounts are S$28,855 for Grades 1–4, S$32,440 for Grades 5–9 and S$35,080 for Grades 10–12. The grade bands differ, so use the applicable grade rather than comparing band labels alone. For a new Grade 11 IB pupil paying the full levy, tuition, entrance charge and development levy total S$54,070 before materials, activities, support, trips and transport.

The annual development levy falls from S$6,130 to S$3,065 from the second year of enrolment; the reduction also applies to the third child onwards. GESS separately describes a loyalty discount from the second year, but its current fee FAQ does not give an amount. The S$3,065 loyalty figure in the 2024–25 schedule is historical. Ask admissions to show the current loyalty discount and levy reduction separately, since they may not have the same value.

The fee page lists S$335 annually for learning materials and excursions, not prorated, and S$280–450 per co-curricular or language activity each semester. Class-trip estimates range from S$350 to S$2,500 by grade; not every grade has the same trip requirement. EAL costs S$3,090 per semester for regular or S$6,180 for intensive provision. Learning support costs S$2,945 or S$5,890 per semester respectively. A secondary transport account gives two-way semester fares of roughly S$1,090–1,712 by distance; confirm the current route and rate.

The published withdrawal dates are 15 October for departure at the end of Semester 1 and 31 March for a pupil not returning the following school year. The student contract determines notice requirements and the charges that apply after a missed deadline, which matters when planning a posting change.

Which section, and why it matters

Language, qualifications and later transitions

The German International Abitur and the IB Diploma can support university applications in Germany and elsewhere, subject to programme-specific requirements. They should not be treated as a Germany-only and worldwide choice. For study in German, language evidence such as the relevant DSD level may also matter. Neither pathway guarantees admission or tuition-free university study.

Entry to the German section depends on the school’s requirements for language and curriculum placement, not on passport nationality. A later move between sections also needs individual assessment, with no published universal age limit for switching; language support, completed subjects and the intended examination pathway decide it.

Community participation and the school run

The parent association and school events provide ways for families to take part in the community. German-language provision and the English-medium IB section bring different educational backgrounds onto the same campus. A visit can show how pupils interact across sections and how new families are introduced to school activities.

The campus is in Singapore’s northwest, near Dairy Farm and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Bus provision is described in distance bands. Pickup point, start time, after-school options and the journey from the proposed home matter more than a nearby district name.
