Downe House Riyadh opened in September 2022 — the same month as sister school Downe House Muscat — as part of the wave of British schools attracted to the capital under the Royal Commission for Riyadh City’s International Schools Attraction Programme.

It extends the model of Downe House in Berkshire, a girls’ boarding and day school founded in 1907 by Olive Willis in Charles Darwin’s former home, into the Saudi market: co-educational from Nursery to Year 4, then girls-only from Upper Prep to Year 13, with what the school describes as an all-female faculty.↗↗

For an expat family, the practical summary is this: this is the premium girls’-education option in Riyadh’s new wave, priced to match — 2026/27 aggregator listings run from SAR 54,855 (Nursery) to SAR 97,520 (Years 12–13) including VAT, and our arithmetic shows those figures are exactly the 2025/26 base fees of SAR 47,700–84,800 with 15% VAT applied, meaning base tuition was held flat year over year.

There are no published exam results and no independent inspection report yet; you are buying the brand, the model and the facilities rather than a track record in Riyadh.↗↗

The girls’-education proposition — and what it means for sons

The structural fact to plan around is the Year 4 exit for boys. Families with sons and daughters can keep both in one school through Lower Prep, but from Upper Prep the school is girls-only, mirroring the UK parent.

WhichSchoolAdvisor reports an agreement under which Downe House boys transfer to King’s College Riyadh on completion of Year 4 — convenient on paper, and worth confirming directly, but it means a mid-primary school change for your son is built into the model, not an edge case.↗

The all-female faculty is a deliberate part of the offer — the school presents it as preserving traditional values and providing a culturally comfortable environment, which is precisely why the model found a receptive market in Saudi Arabia: a British girls’ school that aligns with local expectations for older girls while teaching the English National Curriculum toward IGCSE and A-level.

Families who want co-education throughout should look elsewhere; families who specifically want girls-only secondary education with a British curriculum have very few alternatives in the city.↗

Academics in practice

Heritage-rich, evidence-light — for now

The academic claim is inherited excellence: Downe House UK is a genuinely strong school — over a century old, consistently high-performing in GCSE and A-level league tables, and experienced in sending girls to top universities.

The Riyadh school teaches the British curriculum with Arabic, Islamic Studies and Social Studies integrated, and articulates the same “Downe House DNA” values — collaboration, resilience, creativity, aspiration, compassion, communication. But the Riyadh campus has published no examination results and holds no BSO or CIS inspection rating; WhichSchoolAdvisor shows “No rating”.

Ask what quality assurance the UK school performs — seconded leadership, inspection visits, shared teacher training — and ask to see the outputs.↗↗

The honest framing: with a September 2022 opening and year-by-year growth, the senior school is young and cohorts are small. First examined cohorts are recent or still ahead, so there is no results record to interrogate — and any school quoting you percentages this early is quoting tiny denominators.

What you can interrogate is staffing: ask about teacher tenure, UK-qualified ratios, and how the all-female faculty requirement affects recruitment depth in specialist subjects like physics and further maths.↗

Admissions and cost

Admissions, fees and the real year-one cost

Published fees: the 2025/26 schedule ran from SAR 47,700 (Nursery/KG1) to SAR 84,800 (Years 12–13) excluding VAT, and 2026/27 listings of SAR 54,855–97,520 are those same base figures with 15% VAT applied — non-Saudi families pay VAT, Saudi nationals are exempt.

Admissions charges on the current fees page are a one-off SAR 500 application fee and a one-off SAR 5,000 enrolment administration fee (both excluding VAT), payable within 7 days of the offer letter or the offer may be withdrawn; the school’s admissions policy adds a SAR 1,000 assessment fee, refundable only if no place is offered.↗↗

Payment terms: tuition is payable in full or in three instalments (40%/30%/30%) in advance of each term, with a 5% discount for full-year single payment by bank transfer, cheque or cash. Fees exclude lunches, transport, trips and external-provider activities.

The 2024/25 policy adds the texture parents trip over: in-term joiners pay a minimum of 50% of the first term’s fees, offers are conditional on declared SEN/EAL needs with support programmes mandatory if the school assesses them as necessary, and the earlier structure included a 50%-of-first-term acceptance deposit within 7 days — confirm which acceptance-payment structure applies to your offer.↗↗

The family experience

A school built for a specific family

Downe House Riyadh is unusually clear about who it is for: families — Saudi and expatriate alike — who want a British girls’ school with single-sex education from age 9 and a faculty modelled on that premise.

The school describes a purpose-built, high-specification campus and a values programme imported from Berkshire; aggregators put capacity at around 2,200 students, which means plenty of physical room to grow into.↗↗

Parent-sentiment data is thin, as it is across Saudi Arabia’s new schools — we found no substantial English-language forum record, and we say so rather than inventing consensus.

What we can say from the documents: the school is competing hard for its founding generation of families, base fees were held flat into 2026/27, and the girls-only-from-Year-5 model makes it a deliberate choice rather than a default.
