GEMS Dubai American Academy (DAA) is a co-educational, all-through American-curriculum school for KG1 to Grade 12 in Al Barsha South 1, operated by GEMS Education. Students work toward the US High School Diploma with Advanced Placement options, and can take the IB Diploma Programme in Grades 11-12.

It is the only American-curriculum school in Dubai rated Outstanding by the KHDA — a rating it has held at every inspection since 2011-12.↗↗

For an expat family, the practical summary is this: DAA is the default shortlist answer for a US-system family in Dubai, and the dual US-diploma-plus-IB structure genuinely hedges a child’s university options across the US, UK and elsewhere.

The counterweights are scale — roughly 3,100 students — and a flat ultra-premium fee from Grade 1 up, with no sibling discount until the fourth child.

What the school is

A big American school with an IB bolt-on that works

The school’s defining curricular fact is the dual track. All students follow the American programme toward the US High School Diploma — with a reported 34 elective options and AP courses — while the IB Diploma runs as the parallel Grade 11-12 pathway.

That combination is rarer than it sounds: most Dubai schools force a British-versus-IB or American-versus-IB choice far earlier, and parents specifically cite DAA’s breadth — including IB Film, Theatre, Music and Art — as a reason for choosing it.↗

The IB numbers support the structure: the class of 2024 averaged 34 points against a global average of 30.3, with a 96% pass rate and a top score of 44.

Read those as school-reported figures for one cohort — ask for the multi-year series and the size of the IB cohort relative to the diploma-track cohort, which tells you how the school’s centre of gravity splits between the two qualifications.↗

Governance is straightforwardly corporate: DAA is part of GEMS Education, the region’s largest for-profit operator, with GEMS-group systems for fees, transfers and parent portals. Inspection, counselling and the scale question

The KHDA’s 2023-24 inspection — the most recent full cycle before Dubai’s two-year pause — rated teaching, learning skills and leadership Outstanding across all four phases, and rated inclusion for the school’s 326 students of determination Outstanding. From 2026-27 the KHDA returns with a differentiated model of full inspections and shorter monitoring visits.↗↗

University counselling is a reported strength: twelve guidance counsellors across the school, four of them dedicated to high-school university preparation, with destinations cited across the US (Princeton, Columbia, Johns Hopkins), the UK (UCL, King’s College London) and Canada (McGill, Toronto, UBC).

Admissions and cost

Admissions, fees and the calendar

The published 2025-26 tuition is AED 66,185 for KG1 and KG2, then a flat AED 93,300 for every grade from 1 to 12 — an unusual structure that removes the usual escalation by phase but prices primary grades at secondary levels.

Fees are paid termly (40/30/30) and include loaned books, an iPad in Elementary and Middle School, and internal after-school activities; uniform, transport, lunch and external activities are extra, and Middle and High School students supply their own laptop. Dubai’s KHDA has frozen tuition for 2026-27.↗↗

Three fee details deserve attention. First, the freeze covers tuition only: from 2026-27 the school introduces a AED 10,000-per-year charge for students eligible for its English Language Learner programme (KG2 to Grade 12) — a significant ancillary line for families arriving with developing English.

Second, sibling discounts start only at the fourth child (15%, rising to 25% for the fifth and beyond) — much less generous than group peers. Third, entry costs run AED 525 (application, with VAT), a 10% registration deposit on offer, and 5% re-enrolment annually.↗↗

On timing: DAA is heavily subscribed at natural entry points, and mid-year joiners can be billed from the start of their enrolment month — helpful when negotiating a mid-contract arrival. Reported teacher turnover of around 9% is low for Dubai, which matters more for continuity than any single year’s results.↗↗

Location, community and the daily reality

Al Barsha South 1 sits inland from the Marina corridor, practical for families in Al Barsha, the Greens, Emirates Hills, JVC, Motor City and the southern villa communities — the same school-dense district that holds GEMS World Academy and several other group flagships.

Morning traffic around the Al Barsha school cluster is heavy; test the run at drop-off time.

The community is the most American of any Dubai school in this series — the US is the largest student and teacher nationality across 105 nationalities — which eases transition for US-system families and is worth probing if you are arriving from a British or IB background.

The calendar follows the American school year, the grading is US-style, and the counselling machinery is oriented to US college applications first.↗↗

The default American answer in Dubai — priced and scaled accordingly

DAA’s public record is strong and distinctive: the only Outstanding-rated American school in the emirate, twelve-plus years at that level, a genuinely functional dual US-diploma/IB structure, and a first-party fee page that is clearer than most — including honest disclosure of the new ELL charge that many schools would bury.

Our confidence is Medium rather than High because this edition is document-based, the IB results we quote are one cohort old, and several texture points (destinations, turnover, campus additions) rest on aggregator compilations of school-reported data.

The fit question starts with curriculum: this is the wrong building for a British- or IB-continuum family, whatever the rating says, and the right one for a US-system family or one deliberately hedging across systems.

Within the American lane, the comparison set is the American School of Dubai (not-for-profit, older, not in this series) rather than any GEMS peer.
